SAMBURU GAME RESERVE
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves The three reserves lie about 325 kms from Nairobi and 50 kms from Isiolo town on the Isiolo-Marsabit road. The Samburu and Buffalo Springs are traversed by the Uaso Nyiro river.
The beautiful scenery and wildlife along the banks of this river are some of its major attractions. The strips of riverine forest, thickets and clusters of tall feathery Doum Palms create a lively habitat for many species, particularly primates.
The Shaba National Reserve was established in 1974. Shaba got its name from a cone of volcanic rock in the reserve. There are northern species endemic to these parks & found easily which include the Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, the Gerenuk or Gazelle-giraffe, Reticulated Giraffe & the Vulturine Guinea fowl.
