COMMUNITY CAMPS & PROJECTS

Responsible tourism leads to conservation of the environment & wildlife when handled in a responsible manner. African Latitude  is active in their support of local communities. Throughout the years we have been working together with communities in our locations of operation, training them as guides and offering employment in various aspects of safari services. Today we are supporting 8 primary schools throughout the Loita Hills.

Clients joining our safaris are directly contributing to the welfare & education of young school children. The parents of the children welcome the tourism to their region and thus have good reason to protect their natural environment so that more visitors will come.

Back in Nairobi we support an orphanage in Kibera slums. Again we make monthly contributions to provide the children's daily lunches, as well as organising activities throughout the year for the children. You can read more about Siloam Orphanage Kibera slums

Funds from Conservation fees are distributed to the local people in various forms of bursaries and support. Once again by visiting those lodges and camps, visitors are directly helping in wildlife conservation & community development.

LOISIIJO LODGE

Loisiijo Lodge in Shompole Group Ranch was opened by us in early 2010 after 12 months of rebuilding and taking over a previously failed project. This is a new community tourism project in the Lake Magadi - Nguruman escarpment region of south west Kenya. The lodge is owned by the Masai Community of the Shompole Group Ranch, we are training local community members  and employing them in the everyday running of the lodge. The Shompole Group Ranch have created a wildlife conservation area adjacent to the lodge and now after 9 years of operation this has become  a great success story with much wildlife returning to this region, lions, elephants, oryx, giraffe and many other species. HAMMERKOP CAMP

Hammerkop  camp has 7 large canvas tents, each with adjoining toilet & shower, a large mess tent and all in the style of the traditional safari camp. Located centrally within the Masai Mara Game Reserve in one of the best locations for game viewing and easy access to the Mara River.

ILTUROT CAMP

Tucked into the south western corner of Kenya, the Loita Hills forms an island of indigenous forest and rolling hills rising up into the western escarpment of the Rift Valley. Situated between the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti plains in Tanzania but with little road infrastructure, this area has remained an unexplored region to the delight of those who have the opportunity to visit.

KALACHA CAMP

Kalacha Camp sits on the edge of a permanent oasis in the Chalbi desert. It was set up as a community based project for the Gabbra people of this area, providing them with a further source of income. The camp has 4 bandas with twin bed and ensuite bathroom with flush toilet and cold shower
